New Zealand is one of the world's greatest hiking destinations. Sir Edmund Hillary was born here, and like thousands of his fellow Kiwis, spent much of his youth exploring the country's spectacular alpine meadows, pristine mountains, glaciers, and coastal wilderness. No snakes or bears - just some world class scenery to enjoy! Whether you want a long overland hike into World Heritage parks, or a comfortable lodge from which to take day treks along mountain streams, pastures, and turquoise bays, New Zealand is a hiker's dream. The best season for New Zealand is mid November through mid March. But if you hike June-August, skiing can be added to the package.

New Zealand: Day Tramps

The New Zealand countryside is filled with short tramps - guided and independent. Many hikers base themselves in a lodge or B&B that offers guided tramps with naturalists. Here are just a few we offer:

North Island
Charming B&Bs in Bay of Islands, varied hikes.
Guided hikes in the kauri forests, stunning coast, and old gold fields of the Coromandel Peninsula
Tongariro Crossing, called the "best one day tramp in NZ."

South Island
A coastal lodge nestled between glacial country and alpine passes, offers day and night hikes.
An alpine lodge easily reached by train, with guided and unguided hiking.
The first day of the famous Milford or Routeburn can be taken as 1-day hike.

You can combine hiking and kayaking in the Abel Tasman National Park.
Here, kayakers rafted their boats to take a rest!"
