Travelers
arrive at Nadi International Airport, where the nearby Coral Coast
sports many of Fiji’s best- priced accommodation. The most sought
after are traditional island bures. The main islands are Viti Luvu and
Vanua Levu. Nearby are the Mamanucas and Yasawa Islands – which have
spectacular white sand beaches and offer the true South Pacific
experience!
One
popular choice is to combine a beach vacation with a cruise
of the Yasawa Islands.
Fiji is
famous for reef, drift, and wall diving as well as spectacular
snorkeling. Many resorts offer kayaking, horseback riding, biking, and
hiking. For a bit of traditional Fijian culture, watch firewalking or
dine on a lovo feast!
For
Families: Fiji is avery popular family destination for Aussies and
New Zealanders. During their school holidays, many head for family
resorts in Fiji which offer kids clubs and babysitting at extremely
reasonable prices.
For
Honeymooners: There are so many Fijian resorts to choose
from! My favorite was its own little island. The resort had
individual bures built along a swath of coconut palms between a white
sandy beach and a tropical mountainside lush with vegetation. The bures
look out onto turquoise waters… and the showers are romantically built
in tiny stone enclosures adjacent to the lavatory. Guests can have the
staff pack a picnic and drop them off on one of the many nearby deserted
islands for a romantic picnic.
For
Nature Lovers: I found a small eco-resort on an island off the
east coast of Fiji’s main island. The only residents are a native
village, and the resort. It has comfortable, modern, units well set up
for couples or families. While the hotels in most resorts stage “kava
ceremonies,” at this resort you go to the village for the ceremony in an
authentic setting. There are archeological spots around the island,
plentiful snorkeling, and you can daytrip to the original capitol of
Fiji. |
